I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella is about a strange moment for two people who might have otherwise not met, and that makes this book even more sweet and poignant. The main character is a girl named Poppy and the story centers around what happens to her after her cell phone is stolen and then she finds another phone in a trash can at an event at a hotel.
Poppy Wyatt loses the ring, finds the cell phone after hers is stolen which then sends her life totally in a new direction. Anxious to get the ring back without alarming her fiancé Magnus, she gives out the new number to the concierge and her friends. Turns out it belongs to the former personal assistant to Sam, a highly placed businessman who is the antithesis of Poppy. What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other’s lives through emails and text messages. As the day develops, Poppy learns that the best-laid plans of mice and brides-to-be sometimes seem less propitious than mistakes, mishaps, and misfortune.
The ending is predictable, but the journey there is enjoyable. Well defined but somewhat annoying characters and an interesting and unusual plot make this worth taking the time to read. I am secretly hoping this turns into a series as I’d love to revisit BOTH of these characters again, even if they are bit parts in a new novel. If you are a fan of Sophie Kinsella’s books, then you definitely shouldn’t miss out on I’ve Got Your Number. I would also recommend it to people who haven’t tried Sophie Kinsella’s books, but would like to, because I think it truly captures what makes her a wonderful writer.
