And Then It’s Spring pays homage to the hopefulness and anticipation that accompanies planting the first seeds of spring in the dark soil of winter–waiting, checking, waiting, wondering if the first green shoots will ever come and imagining all the things that could have gone wrong for those little seeds. Unfolding as a single sentence that carries readers from late winter to spring, the story focuses on a boy in blank-eyed glasses, who slouches in barren farmland with a dog, a turtle, and other assorted animals and birds.
Armed with a wagon of seeds the boy sets about planting each one systematically, burying them under little mounds of dirt. Worry and waiting are recurring themes: did birds eat the seeds? what about that trio of bears, seen happily ignoring the boy’s “please do not stomp here” sign? Another week passes and another until one day the brown is all gone, then one day spring is suddenly, gloriously, here–replacing the brown with shades of green happiness.
This is a gem of a book, bound to be pulled out every spring yet also bound to be read throughout the year in spite of its seasonal theme. Stead’s artwork is warm and charming and the brown is indeed hopeful–full of impending life and a reticulum of animal tunnels with critters just itching to kick themselves free. The second-person narrative and immediately recognizable emotions pull readers close, as do the delicate details and nuanced expressions that grace the interplay between the characters and their subtly changing surroundings. Highly recommend.
